How to Read Your Lagna Chart: A Beginner's Guide
The first time I showed someone their Lagna chart, they stared at the diamond-shaped diagram for a solid two minutes and said, "This looks like a puzzle." They weren't wrong. But once you understand the basic layout, things start to make a lot more sense.
What Is the Lagna?
The Lagna, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It forms the first house of your chart and sets the foundation for everything else. Your Lagna says a lot about your physical appearance, temperament, and how you come across to people who meet you for the first time.
The Twelve Houses — A Quick Overview
- 1st House: Self, personality, health
- 2nd House: Wealth, family, speech
- 4th House: Home, mother, property
- 5th House: Children, intelligence, past-life merits
- 7th House: Marriage, partnerships, business
- 10th House: Career, reputation, father
- 12th House: Expenses, foreign lands, spirituality
Where Do You Start?
Start with the Lagna lord — the planet that rules your rising sign. Find where that planet is sitting in your chart. Its house position and the planets around it tell you a great deal about the direction your life naturally flows.
For example, if you are a Scorpio Ascendant, Mars is your Lagna lord. Mars sitting in the 10th house suggests someone who works very hard, often in fields requiring courage or physical effort. Mars in the 4th might point to someone deeply attached to their roots.
Don't Overthink It
Many beginners try to interpret every planet and every aspect all at once. That leads to confusion. Pick one planet, understand it well, then move to the next. Astrology is a language — and no one learns a language by reading the whole dictionary in a day.
