Mangal Dosha: Separating Fact from Fear

Millions of marriage alliances are rejected every year because of Mangal Dosha. But is this rejection always justified? A clear, classical guide to understanding when it truly matters.

What Is Mangal Dosha?

Mangal Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha or Chevvai Dosham) occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Lagna, Moon, or Venus in a birth chart. The classical texts primarily define it from the Lagna in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th houses.

The Myth of Automatic Rejection

In practice, approximately 40-50% of all horoscopes have some form of Mangal Dosha. Rejecting half the marriage candidates from consideration based on this alone is both impractical and classically incorrect.

The key point that most people miss: Mangal Dosha cancels out when both partners have it. A Manglik person should ideally marry another Manglik, and the dosha neutralises.

Cancellations of Mangal Dosha

  • Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted sign (Capricorn)
  • Mars in the 1st house in Aries Lagna
  • Mars aspected by or conjunct with Jupiter or Moon
  • Mars in the 2nd house in Gemini or Virgo
  • Mars in the 12th house in Taurus or Libra
  • Both partners having Mangal Dosha

When It Does Matter

Full, uncancelled Mangal Dosha in the 7th house (house of marriage) or 8th house (longevity) — without any of the classical cancellations — does warrant attention, particularly regarding relationship conflict, health of the spouse, or marital stability.
